Thanks again, Stuke!Īll in all, this was a great day and a fun way to wrap up the UPWC triple crown. He was then headed out to do the Devil’s Dome loop in the same area, so it was a win-win for both of us. I thanked him with gas money, beer, and snacks. I asked almost everyone I knew, and was very grateful when Stuke Sowle agreed to meet me at Colonial Creek around noon, and drive me back to my car at Easy Pass. That meant I needed a ride from Colonial Creek to Easy Pass. I didn’t have enough time to do both the run and the bike and make it back in time for preschool pick-up. Therefore I was grateful to have an excuse for skipping the bike shuttle – I had to pick up my daughter from preschool that day. I’ve done this ride a couple times before, back in my triathlon/cycling days, and it’s definitely not an easy spin. It’s about a 2-3 hr bike ride of 21 miles and approx 3300 ft of elevation gain from Colonial Creek to Easy Pass. This is a point-to-point route, and some people shuttle themselves from one trailhead to the other by bike. A flat and cushy section of the Thunder Creek trail. I reached Colonial Creek campground just over 7 hrs after I’d started. I managed to miss the rain except for the last hour, when I experienced a brief refreshing sprinkle. Except that I didn’t actually run all those miles, because my knees and ankles started to get a little cranky and demanded occasional walk breaks. I accidentally timed it all perfectly.Īfter Easy Pass, it was approximately 20 miles of downhill running back to the trailhead. Fog starting to obscure Easy Pass as I descend down to Fisher Creek. Looking back at the sunrise from the pass. Fog rolling in around Fisher Peak on the other side of the pass. Sun just starting to make its appearance as I climbed the switchbacks. It’s one of those mornings in the mountains that I will remember for a long time. I logged one of my slowest miles at the top of the pass because it was kinda steep :), but also because I was wandering around taking endless pictures. As I neared the top of the pass I realized I was indeed going to make it just in time for sunrise. Easy Pass in the early morning light was beautiful. I needed a headlamp for the first mile or so, but put it away as soon as I cleared the woods. I hit the Easy Pass trailhead right around 430 am. I realized I might have a chance of catching sunrise at the pass (as recommended by Dee, the first UPWC contestant to finish the route), so I started to hustle. The next morning I was pleasantly surprised to wake up to stars, rather than the forecast clouds and showers. It was a Thursday night, and rain was forecast for the weekend so I had no trouble finding a site, but the campground was still pretty busy. I found a spot next to a nice quiet retired couple and settled in for the night. The night before, I camped at Colonial Creek campground. Thunder Arm as seen from Highway 20 just beyond Colonial Creek campground I forgot that running downhill for 20 miles kinda hurts. I was super excited to do the route and figured it would be a nice day of Type I fun. The Easy Pass route had been inaccessible earlier in the season due to wildfires, but a couple weeks ago they re-opened the area and I immediately started planning my trip. At 24 miles, Easy Pass is the shortest of the three routes, and a net downhill (assuming you go from Easy Pass to Colonial Creek Campground). Last Friday I completed Easy Pass, the third and final route in the Ultrapedestrian Wilderness Challenge “triple crown.” (My trip reports from the other two routes can be found here and here.) Although I was the first to earn the triple crown, I definitely won’t be the last – I know there are at least a handful of people who will be right behind me in the next few weeks. I watched a million Youtube videos before trying it out for the first time because I thought it would be difficult to use. I am overall so impressed with the PMD Personal Microderm PRO. I had a ton of little bumps come to the surface after my second treatment, but they disappeared within four or so days. Personal Microderm removes the top layer of dead, dull skin cells freeing the trapped pores that may be lurking underneath. Be prepared to break out after the first few treatments if you have acne prone skin or clogged pores. My skin was pretty red after my first treatment, but it died down within 10-15 minutes. I use the PMD at night after showering and cleansing my skin. I am two weeks into using this product, and it has already become a vital part of my skincare routine. You will begin to see results after 8-12 weeks! MY EXPERIENCE After you’re done, be sure to wash the cap and filter and replace the discs after every 3-4 uses. Do not apply pressure, and do not stop or remain in one spot. Make sure you hold your skin taunt and smoothly glide the device across your skin in an upward motion. Next, plug in the PMD device and begin with the white disc. The device instructions show to start with the white disc (the most sensitive) and practice on your arm or leg before using on your face.īegin by cleansing your face and thoroughly drying your skin. There are different discs ranging from ultra sensitive to very intense depending on your skin sensitivity and desired results. Because the top layer of skin has been removed, this time between treatments is to recover and regrow new skin cells. It is important that you are giving your skin a full week to rejuvenate before the tool is used again. The PMD Personal Microderm can be used once every 6-7 days. This is why many have credited this device for clearing their skin! Keep reading for how to use the PMD and my personal experience with the product. The Personal Microderm increases cell turnover and triggers the production of collagen and elastin. It was my research on collagen that lead me to the Personal Microderm. Through my research on good skin etiquette and skin care treatments to combat acne, I learned about the vital role collagen plays in combating acne. I’ve spent the past 6 or 7 years fighting these scars and the less than ideal skin complexion my flare ups left behind. Once I finally got the inflamed acne under control, I was faced with an entirely new problem, acne scars. It began with just a few pimples here and there in fifth grade that quickly escalated to full on inflamed acne by sixth. If you’re new to the blog, you probably aren’t aware that I have struggled with acne ever since middle school. Although these prices may first seem steep, remember one professional treatment will put you out $100+ and these devices can be used repeatedly! The PMD Beauty team were kind enough to send me a Personal Microderm PRO to test out in honor of their NINTH BIRTHDAY! I have been eyeing this product for over a year now contemplating whether or not it was worth the investment, and I can now confidently say, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! There are four Personal Microderm tools ranging in price from $159 to $199: Classic, Plus, Pro and Man. I yelled at Matt to come feel how baby soft my skin was after my first treatment because I could not believe the results! I can COMPLETELY attest to these results. Out of a panel of 30 women, 100% of women said their skin was softer after using the Personal Microderm, and 95% said they felt more confident in their skin after using this product. The PMD uses a combination of patented spinning discs embedded with aluminum oxide crystals and vacuum suction to remove dead skin and increase circulation. Personal Microderm (PMD) is an at-home skin care tool that fades the appearance of blemishes, dark spots, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and evens out skin tone and texture. Thankfully, there is a budget-friendly option that rivals the professional treatment for a fraction of the cost. Although I highly endorse receiving professional treatments for your skin, splurging on a treatment that is $100+ per session isn’t feasible for most. A professional microdermabrasion treatment at a spa can set you back $100+ per session. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure that leaves your skin looking softer and brighter almost instantly. If you’re a skin care fanatic, chances are you’ve heard of the benefits of microdermabrasion. But rarely is this what you want, and it will burn you on performance. Whole Pixel CoordinatesĬanvas can draw to sub-pixel coordinates, meaning that it will anti-alias a rectangle that goes halfway into the next pixel so that it looks like it’s a little more on the border than you think. If you’re drawing lots of lines, rectangles, or other shapes, it makes a big performance difference to call the rect method a lot of times and fill once you’re done, rather than calling fillRect every time. The rect method doesn’t immediately draw anything: it records that you want to draw a rectangle in a certain place, and then when you draw fill or stroke, it draws that thing. Batch draw operationsįor an operation like rect, the Canvas API has two methods: rect and fillRect. Changing these properties and drawing with different styles is very expensive relative to drawing many things with the same style. Change style infrequentlyĬanvas keeps the shapes you draw separate from the style you use to draw it: the style is represented in properties like context.fillStyle, context.lineWidth, and context.font. These are a few assorted performance tricks that have a good return on investment. Performance Protipsĭrawing in Canvas is typically fast, but if you’re drawing many things or in realtime, a little optimization can go a long way. This can be an advantage: if you draw millions of circles into a Canvas, the millionth draws as quickly as the first. Canvas, on the other hand, takes your command to “draw a circle”, changes the pixels to show a circle, and immediately forgets about what is drawn. SVG remembers everything you draw: if you add a circle, then you can bind events to that circle, move it, or remove it. SVG is an example of a Retained mode interface, and Canvas is Immediate mode. Canvas vs SVGĬanvas is a very different system than SVG. If you want to handle high pixel densities in Canvas, you have to do it yourself by doubling the image size and halving its displayed size, like you would with an image tag. The Canvas API is a fundamentally raster way to interact with pixels: you can even interact with your drawings as pixels, using the getImageData and createImageData methods. moveTo, lineTo, bezierCurveTo, etc: lines. The Canvas API provides the means to draw several fundamental types: The MDN reference for CanvasRenderingContext2D is a good handbook to have at your side when you start interacting with these APIs. In a typical animation, I’ll use only a few methods, like fillRect, moveTo, beginPath, and others. Read Dive into Canvas for the first steps of interacting with a Canvas context. If you’re familiar with Canvas and just want animation protips, feel free to skip ahead. Animation is flashy and fun, but it’s not magic. With a few tricks, you can write animations for the three big output formats: the web, GIFs, and video. The 2D Canvas API is a fantastic tool for implementing animations of all kinds.
You can override it of course and continue your work, but I found it super effective in getting my attention to actually take the break.īreak Timer desktop app screenshot from Chrome Web Store You can customise how often you want to take a break and it gives you a 30 second warning before you get a full green screen to stop you from your work and take the break. I found this one amazing due to it’s simple full screen break capability. Missing from the microbreak extension is the ability to add a “sound” reminder to the small reminder window that could be easy to miss.īreak timer has a coffee mug icon as its identification symbol, and simply works as a reminder to take any kind of break. Micro breaks desktop app screenshot from Chrome Web Store It recommended the 20/20/20 rule for eyesight breaks: every 20 minutes for 20 seconds and to look 20 feet away from your computer. Micro break’s reminders have a preset timing for each category that you can change and customise. It offers customisable break timing in the following categories: eye breaks, breathing, exercise and taking an actual work break. Micro Breaks is easy to install, and has a handy icon that looks like a person taking a break (and jumping for joy). Therefore, I focused on three Chrome extensions, since Chrome transcends most computer platforms. Many phone apps can do the job, however in my own implementation of these apps, I found it easy to “ignore” my phone when deep into the throes of a work project. How do you implement these basic physical needs into your day? Myriads of developers have designed apps and programs to help remind you to stand up, look away, correct your posture, and take a stretch. I am particularly emphatic about enforcing correct desk stretches and timely breaks to minimise the potentially career threatening implications. Eyesight diminishment, migraines, back pain, neck pain and scarier health concerns such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes are all side effects of hours and hours of sitting hunched over your computer.Īs a posture and pain specialist I have witnessed many careers thwarted by the physical effects of desk-based jobs. This article explains the accounting cycle, and the bookkeeping and accounting tasks that are required to complete the cycle. Accounting tasks can be time consuming, but you can work more productively if you have a clearly defined process. Remember how the senior bookkeeper we looked at above used words like “executed” and “improvised”? Both of these words are optimal in the sense that they impart a decisive capability in addition to creativity.įor less senior bookkeepers, such as the one featured in the first template, “audited”, “processed”, and “developed” are solid options that can kick off into quantifiable, relevant accomplishments. Knowing what action verbs speak strongly about your experiences can also go a long way in creating an impactful resume that will generate interest in hiring managers. Between the two statements, the first one gives a clear expectation as to when you were able to provide results, while the second one is a much softer statement overall.Īs a bookkeeper, you’ll want to focus on relevant quantitative data points, such as the size (in dollars) of accounts you’ve handled, the number of final account statements you’ve processed, or the number of vendors you’ve tracked W-9s for - all of which are examples from the first resume we reviewed. This helps hiring managers gain an immediate understanding of your capabilities and the kinds of results you can deliver.Ĭonsider these two statements, both from the entry level resume we looked at previously: “regularly completed the company’s accounting procedures 4-7 days prior to monthly due dates” and “reconciled accounts payable and receivable and handled monthly and quarterly closings in an efficient manner”. The bigger the word, the more frequently it appears on job postings, and the more 'important' it is.Īs part of a numbers-focused industry, bookkeepers should include numerical or quantifiable accomplishments whenever possible. Match these with your own experiences and abilities and try to feature at least one in your bullet points and summary (if you opt to include one).Īnother helpful resource in identifying what skills you should include is the job listing itself. On the left, we’ve collected the skills that come up most often on bookkeeper resumes. This not only reinforces to hiring managers that you are familiar with the profession, it also helps clear gatekeeping Applicant Tracking Systems. Throughout your resume (and in a skills bank somewhere on your resume), you should aim to include skills that are more relevant to the bookkeeping profession. To help you fine tune it further, we’ll also be going over tips on polishing your resume, including what action words to emphasize to best demonstrate your capabilities. In this guide, we’ll be looking at four examples of bookkeeper resumes that you can base your own resume on (depending on your background). With the more routine tasks being absorbed by automation, future bookkeepers can be expected to have the ability to see the bigger picture and act in an advisory capacity. Technical skills are required for bookkeepers, particularly when it comes to accounting software, so anticipate needing to be familiar with some of the more popular options. To become a bookkeeper, or excel at being one, you’ll want to have an analytical mind with an affinity for attention to detail. While that number is projected to gradually shrink due to automation stemming from machine learning advances, the demand for bookkeepers is high due to the number of retiring bookkeepers from the Baby Boomer generation. Bookkeepers, who are typically charged with keeping an accurate record of all financial transactions, are essential for that to take place.īookkeepers represent a significant portion of the workforce, with more than 1.5 million employed in the U.S. For companies of any size, the ability to keep track of incoming and outgoing funds is critical for operating successfully. |
